This week at Blues Union Gui and Jenn will be teaching the beginner and intermediate lessons. The intermediate lesson is called Setting Yourself Up To Improvise:

Blues dancing is improvisation. The problem is, when you’re on the dance floor, it can feel like you’re staring at a blank sheet of paper and you’re being told to create a work of art – where do you start?! Luckily, there are tricks you can learn to change your pattern of dancing so that it’s almost impossible NOT to improvise new, exciting moves. This class will teach you how to set up your dancing so that you have to improvise.

We will be changing up the schedule for this class. Let me type in caps, to be perfectly clear.

THE INTERMEDIATE CLASS WILL BE FROM 7:30 TO 8:30

THE BEGINNER CLASS WILL BE FROM 8:30 TO 9:00

We would love for the intermediate dancers to stay in the rotation and help the beginners get ahead as quickly as possible!

After the lesson, Gui and Rif will be spinning us some sultry Blues music until 11!

The lesson and the dance cost $10, and the dance alone costs $5.

Thursday, June 23

This week we will be continuing our Beginner lesson crash course with Gui and Jenn, which will run from 7:30 to 8:00. Come and soak up as much as you can, and then prepare yourself for… the Blues Clinic! We’ll be throwing Gui, Jenn, Julie, Sara and perhaps Ogden into the mix, giving personalized feedback to everyone for an hour instead of having a lesson. This is a great way to get better at Blues dancing FAST – you’re essentially getting a mini private lesson for a fraction of the price!

Once all that is done, the dancing kicks in full gear from 9 to 11. This Thursday we’ll have the lovely Downtown Julie Brown and Zac “I prefer beer” Wine throwing down some tunes for us.

Coming for the lesson or the Clinic and staying for the dance costs $10, while just the dance costs $5.

Thursday, June 11

Hey, folks! Ogden Sawyer and Amanda Gruhl will be joining us yet again, opening Blues Union with a beginner’s lesson at 7:30pm- so if you’ve been wanting to get into it, or you have a friend you’ve been wanting to bring, this is a great chance! At 8pm, Ogden and Amanda bring us Interactive Blues. Here it is in their words:

How do followers know when and where they can add some styling to the dance without hijacking the lead?  How do leaders create space in the dance for the follower to style, while still maintaining the lead/follow dynamic? This class will cover the techniques necessary to create an interactive dance with your partner that allows both of you to have input into the dance. Followers will learn to suggest, rather than steal, and leads will earn how to take those suggestions and blend them seamlessly into the dance.  Don’t miss it, and don’t be late!

Following the lesson, Ogden Sawyer and John Brooks will be DJing.

Thursday, June 4

This week Gui and Jenn are throwing down a lesson on how to make people smile, whether that happens to be you, your dance partner, or the people appreciating your dance from the sidelines.  We’ll be teaching you ways to be silly, playful and creative on the dance floor without abandoning your partner or your connection.  This will be an entirely new class, so we hope you can make it and try it out!

After the class (which runs from 8 to 9 PM), Gui and Rif will be spinning some Blues for us!

The dance plus the lesson costs $10, and just the dance costs $5.
