Virtual Anniversary Party: May 27

Happy 12th anniversary to Blues Union! To celebrate this year, we’ll have several special dance performances–some blues and some from our extended dance family, some local pals and some friends from afar–and then we’ll close out the night with a set of live music from Willie. J Laws! https://www.williejlawsband.com/

Feel free to dance, cook, draw, or just chill & hang out during the live music. We appreciate you any of the ways. ❤

As usual, this is a pay-what-you-can event; we want this to be financially accessible to everyone. ALL donations and any profits from the night will go to the performers (dancers and musician). Tickets are available here.

The event will likely run from about 8-9:30pm, with some leeway for dancer time and unexpected technology behavior. 🙂

Monthly check-in on personal goals related to anti-racism. (8:00-9:15pm EST)

We check in on what we each did last month for anti-racism actions & then set our goals for next month. Each person sets their own goals, but can get help from the group if needed (can be around work, neighborhood, personal education/growth, family, dance, etc.).

The group goal is to help us all stay on track or get back on track with our anti-racism work, and to be in community around these actions.

Everyone is encouraged to join, regardless of whether you joined the previous months or not and whether you met your goals or not ❤

If you don’t have an idea for what to set as your goal/actions, we have something you can do! https://blacklivesmatter.com/black-lives-matter-global…/

Behind the Blues: Lecture 2 with Dr. Matthew Morrison (8:00-9:00pm EST)

Join us for another lecture session, this time with Dr. Matthew Morrison, on “The politics of enjoyment and pleasure: Appropriation and Exploitation.

“Suggested donation $5-25. Your donation funds this and future lectures in the series. You can donate more or less (including $0 if that’s what’s doable for you). Donate here: https://withfriends.co/…/behind_the_blues_lecture_2…

This is the second in a series of refreshers on Blues history, context, & culture, to help us better understand the blues genre and to inspect how we participate in this art form.

Matthew D. Morrison, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, is an Assistant Professor in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Matthew holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Columbia University, an. M.A. in Musicology from The Catholic University of America, and was a Presidential music scholar at Morehouse College, where he studied violin and conducting. His research focuses on the relationship between (racial) identity, performance, property, copyright law, and inequities within the history of American popular music and beyond. https://tisch.nyu.edu/…/clive-davis-institute/918859097

This event is brought to you by the Blues and Jazz Dance Book Club, Blues Union, Bluetopia, Powerhouse Blues, Terminus Blues Dance, Wilkerson Blues Dance, Fireside, BluesPort HK, and other blues dance organizations.
