This week at Blues Union

Thursday, April 26

This week we’ve got an opportunity to geek out and more hip shaking fun with:

Blues Clinic (7:30-8:30)
The Clinic is an opportunity to work one-on-one with instructors and to work with your friends and peers. Music plays in the background as people work together, and the instructors move around the room, working with people one-on-one or in couples. When not working with instructors, people work with peers, dance with each other, try new things they’re working on, or try things the instructors have helped them with. You can work on material from that month’s series class, workshops you took recently, or anything you like!

Blues Basics: Jukin’ A (8:30-9:30)
with Jenn Martinez and K. Faye Jones
This weekly drop-in class is designed for new-to-blues dancers or anyone wanting to focus on the fundamentals. No experience or partner required! This month, we’ll be learning some jukin’ blues! Jukin’ is a sub-style of blues dances that were danced in juke joints, house parties, and other small social spaces. Danced to guitar, harmonica, and piano-based blues, this style has greater independence between partners. This month, we’ll work on getting great hip movement, working on the Fishtail, Mooch, Grind, Figure-8s, and Slow Drag.

Joey Science and Paul Loschak will be behind the DJ booth to get your Blues groove on.

As always, the clinic is $5, and the dance an additional $5.

Thursday, April 19

Join us for another week of shaking up our creativity and our hips in:

Expressin’ the Blues (7:30-8:30)
with Jenn Martinez and Forrest Rogers-Marcovitz
Blues is more than a dance genre, blues is a feeling! When you have a lot of vocabulary, how can you use it to make artistic choices? In this series we’ll workshop ways to connect to the energy and emotion of blues music, as well as develop more personal meaning in our dance styles. We’ll also explore how we can present that in both social and performative/competitive contexts.
