This week at Blues Union

Thursday, October 3

This month brings a yet another new series and the triumphant return of Joshua Boroff and Devona Cartier:

Moves Four Ways (7:30-8:30)
We have created a series of moves for you to enjoy. Each week we will focus on a different topic using those same moves; technique, connection (with a good bit of info for follows), dynamic tension, and musicality. The first week will focus on vocabulary. Week two will concentrate on technique and connection. Week three will continue with technique and how it relates to the Blues aesthetic. And it will all be wrapped up in week four with musicality and tension.

Blues Basics + Beginner Clinic (8:30-9:30)
This weekly drop-in class is designed for new-to-blues dancers or anyone wanting to focus on the fundamentals. It will provide enough moves to have fun on the dance floor, as well the opportunity to hone and polish the core techniques behind the dance. Each week, we’ll cover something new, so you can come every week, or just drop in for a class or few. This class includes the beginner clinic, where you can work on your dancing one-on-one with instructors and advanced dancers. This month it will be taught by Jen Vannest and Jan Marie.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is an additional $5.

Thursday, September 26

The Dirty Water Lindy and Blues Exchange is upon us again. As usual, Blues Union will be co-hosting the opening night Swing and Blues Party! Please note the schedule and location changes below.

This month’s role-switching series will be wrapped up with an all levels class from Jenn Martinez and special guest Chris Mayer:

Role-Switching (All Levels, 8-9)
Come experience the other side of the looking glass! Learning the other dance role is not only fun (and ensures you can find a partner more often :), but it improves your dance skills all around.

Understanding both sides of the connection helps us listen better, speak more clearly, and understand our partner’s role, movement, and feeling, even in our primary dance role. In this class we’ll work on basic lead-follow skills, how to apply them to the other role, and how this helps improve your primary dance role. We’ll also learn some fun moves to “trade” the lead back and forth with a partner who also dances both roles.

Plus, to keep you on your feet till midnight, there will be fantastic DJs and live music! Jan Marie & the Mean Reds will be playing a set, while Dan Legenthal and Jonathan Pechon will be behind the DJ booth.

This will be taking place at the Crosby Whistle Stop, located at:
24 Roland St
Charlestown, MA 02129

The night is included if you’re registered for Dirty Water. The price at the door, with the lesson included, is $12 general, $10 students and seniors.

Thursday, August 29

We got through boot camp, now it’s time for a Blues Clinic:

Blues Clinic (7:30-9:30)
The Blues Clinic is an opportunity to work one-on-one with our Blues Union instructors and to work with your friends and peers. Music plays in the background as people work together, and the instructors move around the room, working with people one-on-one or in couples. When not working with instructors, people work with peers, dance with each other, try new things they’re working on, or try things the instructors have helped them with. You can work on material from that month’s series class, workshops you took recently, or anything you like! From 8:30-9:00, we have our Blues Basics class as usual, while the clinic continues in the rest of the room. It will be taught by Ruth Evelyn and Andrew Matteson.

Amy Kucharik and Sarah Elise will behind the DJ booth to scratch your Blues itch.

As always the Clinic is $5, and the dance an additional $5.
