September is going to be a fun month, folks! It all starts with two class series from our resident goofballs:
Blues at the Savoy (7:30-8:30)
with Jenn Martinez and Forrest Rogers-Marcovitz
Come dance drapey, draggy, Ballroomin’ blues. This month we will focus on the slower, jazzier side of blues music played in larger ballrooms like the Savoy in Harlem. Inspired by movement and dance from the time, we will work on ways to gracefully glide around the dance floor and use momentum for elegant, dynamic moves.
Blues Basics: Triple-Step & Improvisation (8:30-9:30)
with Jenn Martinez and Forrest Rogers-Marcovitz
This month, each week covers a different topic. On the first and third weeks, we’ll learn blues dances that use a triple-step rhythm, and work on traveling, chill turns, and side passes. For the second and fourth weeks, we’ll learn how to listen to the music, find your own basic, and build a beautiful dance to any style of blues music.
Plus, for the whole month, we’re bringing back an old Blues Union tradition: DJ battles! During the second set, 2 of our fabulous DJs will be battling it out to win your favor. All you lovely people will decide who plays the best songs and who has the best flow.
Steve York will spin the first set to get your Blues groove on. Then, first in the battle arena will be Downtown Julie Brown vs the Reverend Don Coverdale!
As always, the lesson is $5, and the dance an additional $5.
