This week at Blues Union

Thursday, January 30

What better way to close out month on community than with games and fun moves? Join us for:

Extended Topics: Dance Games (7:00-8:00)
with Joey Science and Julie Brown
Come play some dance games! These games are fun on their own, and they help us learn or improve something about our dance too – whether it’s enhancing our creativity, giving us new ideas, or finding new ways of interacting with our partner.

Blues Basics: Jukin’ Blues (8:00-9:00)
with Julie Brown
This month is all about Jukin’ blues – a style of blues dancing that came from house parties, clubs, and places called juke joints. This week we’ll be working on Jukin’ turns and bunch of techniques and styles for them.

The price of each lesson is $5.

After classes, we’ll be venturing out to the Menotomy Grill & Tavern in Arlington for some live blues music.

Thursday, January 23

The community based fun continues in:

Extended Topics: Dancing With the Room (7:00-8:00)
with Joey Science and Julie Brown
Learn ways we can care for and get inspiration from the whole room, while still being present with our current dance partner. Work on floorcraft skills, broadening our focus, and creating a fun and functioning dance floor overall.

Blues Basics: Jukin’ Blues (8:00-9:00)
with Joey Science and Amy Blank
This month, we’ll work on the connection, moves, and stylings for Jukin’ blues – a style of blues dancing that came from house parties, clubs, and places called juke joints.

The price of each lesson is $5.

After class, all are welcome to join us at Backbar!

Thursday, January 16

We’ve got more fun community classes this week in:

Extended Topics: Cross-Level Partnerships (7:00-8:00)
with Joey Science
Ever hear that practice makes perfect? But what if you don’t have anyone around who needs to practice the same things? This week’s class is all about getting the most out of practice regardless of who is around to practice with you. We’ll kick off class by learning about how to find your weaknesses and strengths, and then move into practicing with folks who are either less or more experienced than you!

Blues Basics: Jukin’ Blues (8:00-9:00)
with Zach Brass
This month, we’ll work on the connection, moves, and stylings for Jukin’ blues – a style of blues dancing that came from house parties, clubs, and places called juke joints.

The price of each lesson is $5.

After classes we will head over to Brass Union to socialize. Everyone is welcome, regardless of class attendance.

Thursday, January 9

It’s our first dance night of the year! Come join us for:

Extended Topics: Dancing Solo with Other People (7:00-8:00)
with Mike and Dan Legenthal
Come explore ways to dance solo, but not by yourself! We’ll help you find ways to be comfortable with dancing solo blues with other people, including riffin’, cuttin’ and more! Note: you do not have to be “good at solo” or even comfortable with solo dance yet to get some good info out of this class.
Since we have a ton of material to get through, please try to be here and ready to start by 7 so we can get through as much as possible!

Blues Basics: Jukin’ Blues (8:00-9:00)
with Ruth Evelyn and Jenn Martinez
This month, we’ll work on the connection, moves, and stylings for Jukin’ blues – a style of blues dancing that came from house parties, clubs, and places called juke joints.

Music will be provided by our fabulous DJs Clara Lauterwasser and Julie Brown.

During the break we’ll feature a cuttin’ showcase! Some of our amazing instructors have prepared to show off and throw down with our community members. If you’re interested taking part, attend the extended topics class.

Plus, we’ll have a jam for all January birthdays and anniversaries!

Each lesson is $5. The dance is pay what you can from $5-10.
