This week at Blues Union

Thursday, July 9

Join us as Andi Hansen and Forrest Rogers-Marcovitz show us more ways to turn a dance into a conversation:

Partner Conversation (7:30-8:30)
Come see Andi’s take on partner conversation! Topics will include how to create opportunities for your partner & encourage them to contribute to the dance, continuing the conversation & riffing off your partner, open leading vs closed leading, leading vs moving yourself independently, and exact following vs approximate following.

Blues Basics + Beginner Clinic (8:30-9:30)
This weekly drop-in class is designed for new-to-blues dancers or anyone wanting to focus on the fundamentals. It will provide enough moves to have fun on the dance floor, as well the opportunity to hone and polish the core techniques behind the dance. Each week, we’ll cover something new, so you can come every week, or just drop in for a class or few. This class includes the beginner clinic, where you can work on your dancing one-on-one with instructors and advanced dancers. This month it will be taught by Andi Hansen and Forrest Rogers-Marcovitz.

Jonathan Pechon and Andi Hansen will be behind the DJ booth to whet your Blues appetite.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is an additional $5.

Thursday, July 2

We have an out of town instructor this month – Andi Hansen, from Grand Rapids, MI! Her focus is on creating a safe, comfortable dance where each partner feels confident in expressing themselves. Andi believes that everyone has something to add to the dance, and that nothing is quite like the creativity of playing with the music, your partner, or solo dancing with friends. More on Andi here: http://www.andidances.com/

We’ve been working on momentum this month, and now it’s time to Clinic:

Blues Clinic (7:30-9:30)
The Blues Clinic is an opportunity to work one-on-one with our Blues Union instructors and to work with your friends and peers. Music plays in the background as people work together, and the instructors move around the room, working with people one-on-one or in couples. When not working with instructors, people work with peers, dance with each other, try new things they’re working on, or try things the instructors have helped them with. You can work on material from that month’s series class, workshops you took recently, or anything you like! From 8:30-9:15, we have our Blues Basics class as usual, while the clinic continues in the rest of the room.

Plus, we have live music! Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Five are making their Blues Union debut. They played at this year’s Steel City Blues and were a crowd favorite, so we’re very excited to have them play for us. Learn more about them at http://www.thefairweatherfive.com/

And because we have live music, we’re going till midnight!

As always, the lesson is $5, and since there’s a band, the dance will be $10.

Thursday, June 18

We’ve got one more installment of stretchy fun, this time with Amanda Mayer and Dan Legenthal:

Mo’ Mentum (7:30-8:30)
Put some kick in your Ballroomin’! In this class, we’ll teach complex moves with lots of momentum, and use them to show you how to maximize stretch and redirect energy. Caution: use of momentum can be addictive!

Plus, we have a performance! Back in April, seven of your fellow dancers learned a solo blues routine and committed to performing it at a Blues Union dance. That time has come; they’ll be strutting their stuff during announcements.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is an additional $5.
