This week at Blues Union

Thursday, July 17

Next up in our sampler is Julie Brown with:

Stylin’ Arms (7:30-8:30)
This week continues our Styling series, with stylings for the arms and shoulders! Learn cool movements for your arms & shoulders in solo or partnered, and techniques for making your arm movement look good and connected to the rest of your movement.

Blues Basics + Beginner Clinic (8:30-9:30)
This weekly drop-in class is designed for new-to-blues dancers or anyone wanting to focus on the fundamentals. It will provide enough moves to have fun on the dance floor, as well the opportunity to hone and polish the core techniques behind the dance. Each week, we’ll cover something new, so you can come every week, or just drop in for a class or few. This class includes the beginner clinic, where you can work on your dancing one-on-one with instructors and advanced dancers. This month it will be taught by Jenn Martinez and Jen Vannest.

Julie Brown and Jonathan Pechon will be behind the DJ booth to satisfy your Blues cravings.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is an additional $5.

Thursday, July 10

This month we have another sampler, and it’s all about style! Every week will focus on a different part of the body with a different instructor. First up is Jenn Martinez with:

Stylin’ Legs (7:30-8:30)
You know how to create space as a leader and use space as a follower…but what do you *do* with that space when you have it? This series will give you moves & movements to do solo or as a styling in partnered (“Styling” includes movements that leaders do that they are not leading. e.g. When a follower is doing a styling during a turn, the leader can do a separate styling). This week will focus on cool things to do with the legs, knees, and feet.

Thursday, July 3

Our conversation series has come to a close, so bring on the Clinic:

Blues Clinic (7:30-9:30)
The Blues Clinic is an opportunity to work one-on-one with our Blues Union instructors and to work with your friends and peers. Music plays in the background as people work together, and the instructors move around the room, working with people one-on-one or in couples. When not working with instructors, people work with peers, dance with each other, try new things they’re working on, or try things the instructors have helped them with. You can work on material from that month’s series class, workshops you took recently, or anything you like! From 8:30-9:00, we have our Blues Basics class as usual, while the clinic continues in the rest of the room.

As always, the Clinic is $5, and the dance an additional $5.

Thursday, June 26

We are back in action with one more installment of how to have awesome dances from Julie Brown and Dan Legenthal:

Lead-Follow Conversation (7:30-8:30)
This series will cover topics such as leaders creating space for your follower, followers understanding what is being lead and what can be embellished or styled-up, partner listening for both leaders and followers, and how to have great dances with anyone! This weeks the focus will be on how to have the best dances all the time.

Closed June 19

There’s no Blues Union on Thurs, June 19th, due to the Boston Tango Festival. Nooooooooo…

BUT, as a semi-replacement, come to Green Street Studios in Central Square, where Julie Brown will be teaching Sandra’s Stroll (a blues line dance choreographed by Sharon Davis, in honor of the legendary Sandra ‘Boogie’ Gibson), and a fun line dance to Michael Jackson’s Beat It.

Afterwards, we can go check out the Chicken Slacks at the Cantab Lounge.

For the line dances, please bring $1-5 to help cover rent for the space.

For a preview, here’s Sharon herself performing Sandra’s Stroll: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT2FDz5VAHI
and a bunch of Boston ladies performing it a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5k_3rWJmko
