This week at Blues Union

Thursday, March 8

Come join us for some more spatial fun with Amanda Gruhl and Chris Mayer:

Blues…In…Space! (7:30-8:30)
There is much more to blues than close embrace. In this series we’ll cover techniques and concepts that will increase your options when you dance in an open position, while still keeping it as connected, musical, and bluesy as it was in closed.

Beginner Crash Course (8:30-9:00)
This will be a weekly feature designed to introduce novices to Blues dancing. It will provide enough vocabulary to have fun on the dance floor. Plus, when students feel comfortable with this material, they’ll be ready for the Series classes.

Amy Kucharik and special guest Wesley Cook (Denver, CO) will be behind the DJ booth, ready to whet your Blues appetite.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is an additional $5.

It’s time for our monthly Clinic and some live music!

Blues Clinic (7:30-9)
During Blues Clinics we gather as many instructors as we can for personalized instruction. Students dance with instructors and get individual feedback on their dancing. Music plays continuously in the background, and students are encouraged to social dance and give each other feedback while not dancing with instructors.

For your entertainment, we are delighted to bring back Shawn Hershey and the Blues Bananas! Music by dancers for dancers, the Blues Bananas will keep you dancing all night with their unique blend of traditional jazz and blues. You can learn more at www.thefriedbananas.com. Plus, Chris Mayer will be DJing the band breaks.

Since we have a band playing, we’ll be going till midnight.

As always, the Clinic is $5, and as with live music nights, the dance will be $10.

Thursday, February 16

One more week of vintage Blues awesomeness from Joshua Boroff and Devona Cartier:

Slow Drag (7:30-8:30)
Slow Drag is by far the most useful of all the vintage blues dances; you can use it for any blues song, any tempo. The simplicity of the basic step allows you to focus on body movement and connection in class, and musicality and improvisation …out on the dance floor. We will also be teaching a number of moves to round out your vocabulary and make any dance a fun time! Like lindy hop, blues dance originated and evolved from African rhythms and movements, though some of the particulars of frame, rhythm, and connection can be different.

Ready to tickle your Blues taste buds will be Tim Lewandowski  behind the DJ booth.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is an additional $5.
