This week at Blues Union

Thursday, June 10th

This week we are happy to welcome Dan Repsch back to Boston! Last time he was here he threw down a great set of lessons and an even more fabulous set at the DJ booth, and we’re happy to have him back with us! He and Amanda will be teaming up to present…

Rhythmic Runs (Intermediate, 7:30-8:15)

The central focus of this class will be dancing simple rhythms present in a song and creating counter-rhythms of your own for a highly creative, entertaining, and connected dance. We’ll identify a bunch of the rhythms that fit comfortably into most blues music and how to articulate each in different parts of your body, and then work on chaining them together seamlessly. This class will also touch on musicality, partnered and solo jazz movement, and connection.

Shapes, Shifts, and Safety Belts (Beginner, 8:15-9:00)

This is a lesson designed to acquaint beginners with the blues. We’ll start with moving your own body, then introduce a partner and learn the basic shapes that blues dancers create in almost every dance. If you don’t have any experience dancing you’ll be prepared for a social dance by the end of the class and if you’ve been dancing for a while you’ll come away with new ideas and some of the finer details of the fundamentals.

After the classes, Dan will team up with our own Amy Kucharik to spin from 9 to 11! Meanwhile, Amelia’s got you covered with brownies, Gui’s bringing some chips and salsa, and Steve might be convinced to toss in some guacamole.

As always, the lesson is $5 and the dance is another $5.

Thursday, June 3rd

This week we have our traditional first-Thursday-of-the-month Blues Clinic! For an hour and a half, all the Boston Blues instructors we can get will be in a room and available for brief one-on-one coaching sessions. Our focus is on improving your dancing, so we’ll each give you stuff to work on that comes from our own backgrounds in dance, and with all of our combined feedback you’ll have a really good feel for where you stand, what you’re doing well, and what you can work on specifically! All levels are welcome to attend – we usually have an hour-and-a-half long beginner class running throughout, so feel free to come even if you’re coming to Blues dancing for the first time.

After our Blues Clinic, we’ll have Gui Cavalcanti and Khrysti Smyth teaming up to bring you your music for the rest of the night!

This week we’ll have Amelia and Adrienne bringing us brownies, and Micki will be bringing a surprise!

As always, the clinic is $5 and the dance is $5.
